The Ego in the Backseat
I once heard that in this journey of life, we each have three voices traveling with us.
There’s your conscious self in the driver’s seat—making choices, steering the path.
Your soul or higher self sits peacefully in the passenger seat—calm, steady, and wise.
And then there’s your ego, buckled into the backseat—often yelling, warning, worrying.
“Don’t go that way.”
“What if this happens?”
“It’s all going to fall apart.”
It can feel loud. Overbearing. Scary. But the ego isn’t here to sabotage your journey—it’s here to protect you. It wants to be heard, to be seen. So instead of trying to silence it or shove it down, try offering it what it really needs: reassurance.
Say gently, “I hear you. I understand. But we’re safe.”
If you ever feel torn between the fearful voice of the ego and the quiet knowing of your soul, take a moment to pause. Breathe. Ground yourself. Then ask your soul,
“Is this something we truly need to worry about? Or are we okay?”
Most of the time, your soul will say,
“We are okay.”
And the more you listen to your ego with compassion—rather than frustration—the more it will begin to trust the road ahead.
